Furniture Stores

Warren Evans Beds

These guys aren't in Greenwich or its environs, but Pablito's extremely impressed with their service when buying a bed or mattress.

He says "The whole process was amazingly painless. E-mail enquiries were answered promptly. Their Clapham showroom was great, well laid out and informative. The assistants were friendly and extremely helpful. Choice is pretty good and not amazingly expensive

My bed and mattress were delivered to Deptford exactly when I was told they would be. The two delivery guys lugged the bed and mattress into my flat and had it assembled within about 10 minutes. I'm exceptionally pleased with it as well

Added to that, all their beds are made from sustainable woods so I can feel smugly green at the same time."

I have had a veritable army of people recommending this tiny store, which delivers a lot more than it promises from the outside. Sarah tells me that although its front is minute, it goes way, way back and if they haven't got what you need, they can get it quickly for you. Wallpaper, paint, plaster, fireplaces, tiles, nick nacks. The chap there bends over backwards to help out and make helpful suggestions, and the prices are comparable to the big sheds - the only difference being this guy knows what he's talking about.

One small problem is the parking - it's on a red route - but there is short-term waiting space a short way up the road or use Sainsburys and walk round.

Brickwork

Mahon Brickwork

These guys have been cropping up on my radar for some time now; and I have just received yet another glowing accolade for their work in brick restoration. They remove pebbledash and render, and clean up old crumbling brickwork. Adam is just one of a good half-dozen people who have mentioned this company - and has this to say about them:

"His crew of 3 Russian workmen ( hell of a commute if you ask me) turned up at 7am every morning and left at 6pm every evening with no apparent pause for breakfast, lunch or a pee for that matter, despite numerous offers of lunch and ablutions.

They were polite, focussed and unusually for workmen in this category, extremely tidy. They even worked through considerable downpours and after a full day of cleaning the brickwork, they mixed up their own strength and colour of mortar to suit the style and colour of brick and applied a particularly complimentary style of weather-struck pointing, ( it sits proud of the brickwork to deflect running water off the face of the brickwork – red rubbers are very soft and porous ) not practiced by your average British brickie i’m told.
